Ranfurly History
John Turnbull Thomson Statue
Ranfurly was established as a settlement about 1898 to service the railway line. It was originally named Eweburn by the former Otago Chief Surveyor John Turnbull Thomson. You can see a monument erected in his honour in the main street of the township.
The town was renamed Ranfurly after the 5th Earl of Ranfurly who was Govenor General of New Zealand when the railway was extended through the Central Otago area.
