Art Deco

When the Central Otago railway line was constructed, it bisected the Maniototo Plain, and Ranfurly became the central point of the line. The County Offices, banks and other services were moved from Naseby to Ranfurly and from the 1930s the town developed rapidly, adopting the Art Deco building style popular during that era.

A new event on the calendar is the Ranfurly Rural Art Deco Weekend held in February each year. The weekend's programme includes cabaret and cocktails, entertainment, buskers, jazz bands, art and crafts, a jazz brunch and many more activities with a nostalgic theme centred around the Jazz Age.

Many buildings in Ranfurly have been restored to their former Art Deco glory - a visit to the Art Deco Gallery is a must

Otago Central Rail Trail

The Otago Central Rail Trail cuts through the Maniototo District and is great for walking, horse riding and mountain biking. It is one of the longest in the Southern Hemisphere and the only one of its kind in New Zealand.

The Rail Trail passes through some spectacular scenery not seen from the highways, ranging from mountain ranges, hills and gorges, across the vast Maniototo plain, through old gold mining towns, ending amongst the fruit growing areas of Central Otago. The heritage of the old railway line has been preserved, with the retention of viaducts and bridges, and some of the old Railway Stations.

Ranfurly Railway Station

The Ranfurly Railway Station was opened on the 1st of December, 1898, when it became (for the time being) the terminus of the Otago Central line. It consists of a wooden building which includes stationmaster's room, and ticket office, public lobby and ladies' waiting room. There are also sheds for goods, coal and engine, as well as a water tank. The railway platform and turn-table are shingled and made convenient or the travelling public.
